A Crumbling Ecosystem: The Fight to Save the Colorado River
Feature Story Of The Feature Story
Students were thrown a total curveball as they found out that their final reflection wouldn’t be a 1+1 story, though rather an expression of artistic writing. Junior Toby Philipp states, “I thought I just had to throw some documents onto my DP, and call it a semester.”
After further research, we found that Toby only completed 3 pieces of work, which we wanted to know more about. “I started the year off strong with a feature story about one of my teachers’ ecology class. Afterwards, I joined the editorial team – hoping to better people's stories – though no one ended up completing any stories. I ended up only completing a photo-journalism project which I had a lot of fun with and was actually kind of proud of.” he said. “I did learn a lot about journalism though.”
He blurted out once it seemed that the interview would be over. “I learned about different journalistic writing styles such as feature stories and opinion editorials. I ended up writing an opinion editorial piece for my humanities class, which I then transferred into my journalism class as well. I learned the transition-quotation method, and how to objectively write about a situation.” He really did like the transition-quotation method. As a matter of fact, he’s using it as we speak.
“Hopefully, next semester I will be able to edit others’ stories. At the moment no one is turning anything in, which is annoying because I'd like to see my peers work.” He said when asked about his goals and aspirations for next semester. “I really liked this class, and I feel that I made valuable contributions to this class throughout the semester, though I’m sure I could do better.”
